Ancestral Indulgence

Challenge

Molí Coloma is a Catalonian olive oil with centuries of tradition and quality to its name. The brand is a pioneer of the industry, all at once historical and modern. Thanks to the expertise and craft of the Sumarroca family, this olive oil has been crafted from optimum soils. From their home in Subirats, Molí Colomba asked DAf to develop a range of work, from developing brand pillars to packaging. While completing the project it was important to maintain the visual cues of the olive oil world, and recognize the historical importance of Molí Coloma with a modern voice.

Solution

DAf focused on the quality of the olive oil– its richness, its extraction, its taste – which brought us to the idea of indulgence. Here every drop of Molí Coloma becomes a sensorial pleasure, the result of centuries of traditional production. This idea was first incorporated into the new brand pillars before being used to inspire the storytelling and visual identity. Marrying this element of pleasure with the product’s history we came to the concept of: Indulgencia Ancestral, or Ancestral Indulgence.

Brand Pillars

Taking this previously mentioned idea of indulgence, we identified Pleasure as being one of the brand’s key pillars. Inspired by the heritage of the location and the brand itself, we came to Tradition and Legacy. Studying the practices used on the land in Subirats, Biodiversity and Sustainability took the place of Molí Colomba’s third pillar.

Visual Identity

DAf created a new logo and strong visual identify for the olive oil brand. For the logo, we took the tower from a previous design and gave it more context, placing it in front of a simple landscape scene of their land in Penedés. On the tower itself we placed a window with an M shape to subtly reference the brand name. Gold and white pop against a black background, creating an elegant, sophisticated look.

Packaging

For Molí Coloma’s Arbequina line, an aceite de finca, DAf created a dark label with rugged edges that wraps around the bottle from the side, producing a natural, organic feel. The new logo stands out in bright gold against a charcoal background, while the label text appears in white, green and brown connecting to the soil. These colors echo through across the different labels, with touches of earthy green and brown draws the eye around the bottle. The design for olive oil, Maestro de Almazara is more classic and sophisticated. Behind white and gold font, in subtle black on black detail, we see the image of the maestro, examining the quality of the oil.

Ancestral Indulgence
